A great responsibility of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is to review cases where the death penalty has been imposed. I will make this my highest priority to get it right the first time, every time. I have handled many capital murder cases -- both as the lead trial lawyer and on appeal. I know this area of the law and how it is evolving.
Last year the Court handled over 3,500 petitions for writs of habeas corpus. The Judge elected to this bench should have experience in handling writs of habeas corpus at the Court of Criminal Appeals. I have handled many such cases.
JUDGES ELECTED TO THE COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEALS SHOULD SERVE NO MORE THAN TWO ELECTED TERMS:
THIS I PROMISE. THE TERM OF A JUDGE ON THE COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEALS IS SIX YEARS. TWO TERMS IS ENOUGH FOR ANY ONE JUDGE TO SERVE ON THE COURT.
DUE PROCESS AND EQUAL PROTECTION GUARANTEE EVERY CITIZEN ALL OF LIBERTIES FOUND IN THE CONSTITUTIONS OF THE UNITED STATES AND TEXAS: INCLUDING THE RIGHTS TO VOTE, PRIVACY, MARRY, DIVORCE, SPEAK, WRITE, WORK AND WORSHIP WITHOUT UNLAWFUL GOVERNMENTAL INTERFERENCE.
THIS I PROMISE
MONEY SHOULD NOT PLAY A ROLE IN HOW A JUDGE DECIDES A CASE. I ACCEPT NO POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS. PERSONALLY, I BELIEVE IT TO BE WRONG FOR JUDICIAL CANDIDATES TO BAND TOGETHER AS GROUPS IN AN EFFORT TO INFLUENCE AN ELECTION. JUDICIAL ETHICS OPINION 213 PROSCRIBED SUCH CONDUCT. SEE: https://www.txcourts.gov/media/678096/JudicialEthicsOpinions.pdf RECENT LEGISLATION CHANGED THIS, BUT, IN MY VIEW, IT IS STILL WRONG. MONEY GOING TO EACH CANDIDATE SHOULD BE DISCLOSED!
MONEY SHOULD NOT BUY A JUDGE!
There are few reasons to give money to any judicial candidate running a state-wide race in Texas for the Court of Criminal Appeals. The amount of money needed to make a state-wide impact in this race would be huge. Contributions to judicial candidates from law firms, corporations, PACS, special interests and individuals are often motivated by a desire to influence the judge's position on cases that may come before the court. The amounts that may be "given" to a judicial candidate in Texas are insane. I encourage donations to the Texas Democratic Party!
OUR COURTS SHOULD NOT BE FOR SALE !

Here she is--my support staff. My wife, Sheryl Miears, runs marathons and represents children in Court. She's a better person and lawyer than I'll ever be.
My desire to be on the Court gives me an opportunity to give back to others the blessings I've been shown throughout my life.
